Eucharist (First Holy Communion)Eucharist is one of the sacraments of initiation. "Christian initiation is accomplished by three sacraments together: Baptism which is the beginning of new life; Confirmation which is its strengthening; and the Eucharist which nourishes the disciple with Christ's Body and Blood for his transformation in Christ." Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1275
First Communion Preparation for Children Preparing your child for the sacraments is a partnership between family and parish. Baptism was the first step in your child's journey toward full initiation into the Catholic faith. Coming to the table of the Lord in the Eucharist is the next sacrament of initiation, followed by the sacrament of Confirmation (celebrated in the teen years in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis). First Reconciliation is celebrated prior to First Communion. First Communion is generally celebrated in the 2nd grade. Two consecutive years of religious education are required, i.e., 1st grade is a prerequisite. First Communion Masses are usually scheduled on a Saturday during the Easter Season. Students and their parents will also attend a First Communion rehearsal the Thursday prior to participating in the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first time. |
Children who have not participated in the Sacrament of Eucharist and have not been enrolled in religious education classes may be eligible for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) program. RCIC refers to the catechumenal process for children as a whole who are between the ages of 7 and 18 who have not been baptized or who are baptized but have not received their First Holy Communion. RCIC is open to parishioners and non-parishioners who are in need of preparation for these Sacraments and/or for reception into the Church at the Easter Vigil. Whether you are just entering the Church, returning after time away or have decided to delay your children's sacramental preparation, please know you are welcome! Enrollment for RCIA occurs simultaneously with enrollment for Religious Education (Pre-K - 5th Grade, Middle School and High School ). All new students are asked to supply a copy of their baptismal certificate if they have been baptized. For more information, please contact the Coordinator of Children's Faith Formation or the Coordinator of Middle/High School Faith Formation.
